Comprehensive Security Assessment¶
Date: November 7, 2025 Repository: roofsonfire/chat Assessor: GitHub Copilot (Security Auditor) Overall Risk Rating: High – immediate remediation required before public exposure.
Executive Summary¶
- Critical leakage of credentials and JWT payloads through verbose authentication logging exposes production secrets (ASVS V7.3, OWASP Top 10 A09, CWE-532). ✅ Resolved 2025-11-04 via centralized logger sanitization.
- Content Security Policy currently uses
'unsafe-inline'/'unsafe-eval', nullifying XSS protection (ASVS V5.3, OWASP Top 10 A03, CWE-79). ✅ Resolved 2025-11-05 with nonce-based CSP enforcement. - In-memory rate limiting trusts the client-provided
x-forwarded-forheader and lacks shared storage, allowing bypasses and uneven enforcement (ASVS V4.2, OWASP API A04, CWE-807). ✅ Resolved 2025-11-06 by normalizing trusted proxy headers and tightening logging. - Base64 image uploads are accepted without server-side size or MIME validation, enabling DoS and potential injection vectors (ASVS V5.5, CWE-400). ✅ Resolved 2025-11-06 through MIME and size validation in
chatRequestSchema. - CI/CD dependencies and Docker base image are not pinned to immutable digests, weakening supply chain integrity (NIST SSDF PO.3, CWE-494). ✅ Resolved 2025-11-06 via pinned workflow SHAs, Workload Identity Federation, and Docker digest locking.
Top 5 Remediation Priorities
- Strip or mask sensitive logging in NextAuth callbacks and credential flows; centralize redaction policies.
- Deploy a hardened CSP (nonce/hash) and remove unsafe directives from middleware and Next.js headers.
- Reintroduce trustworthy rate limiting (shared store + validated client IP) and enforce per-account quotas.
- Enforce server-side limits for uploaded images (size, MIME allowlist) and total request payload.
- Pin GitHub Actions/Docker dependencies to SHAs or digests; adopt Workload Identity Federation and artifact signing.
Findings by Category¶
Static Application Security Testing (SAST)¶
- Critical – Plaintext credential & token logging (
src/lib/auth/logic.ts, lines 66-107). ✅ Remediated by routing all auth logs through the sanitized logger (src/lib/logger.ts) and removing credential/token dumps. - High – Weak CSP configuration (
src/middleware/security.ts, lines 20-36). ✅ Remediated with nonce-based CSP directives and aligned headers innext.config.ts. - Medium – Rate limiting trusts spoofable headers (
src/middleware/rate-limit.ts, lines 29-39). ✅ Remediated by normalizing trusted proxy headers, logging limit breaches, and exporting helpers for regression testing. - Medium – Unbounded base64 images in chat API (
src/lib/validation/chat-schema.ts, lines 16-33). ✅ Remediated by enforcing MIME allowlist, size caps, and timestamp normalization. - Low – Duplicate/conflicting security headers (
next.config.ts,src/middleware/security.ts). ✅ Remediated – header configuration unified with singleSAMEORIGINdirective.
Dependency & Supply Chain Review¶
- Dependencies (Next 15.5.4, React 19.1.0, NextAuth 4.24.11, Vertex AI SDK 1.10.0) are current; continue regular
npm auditand security advisories monitoring. Document baseline SBOM vianpx @cyclonedx/cyclonedx-npm --json. - GitHub Actions use floating tags (
actions/checkout@v4,google-github-actions/auth@v2). ✅ Completed – workflows now pin SHAs and passactionlintchecks (see.github/workflows/ci.yml). - Dockerfile base image
node:22-alpineis tag-based; pin to digest and runtrivyscans. ✅ Completed –Dockerfilereferences the immutable digest and CI runs container scanning. - Enable SLSA provenance or Sigstore for artifacts; adopt Dependabot auto-merge policies aligned with internal review.
- CI now runs
actionlint(v1.7.6) on every workflow change, downloaded from a pinned release, to enforce syntax constraints and detect unpinned actions.
Secrets & Configuration¶
- No hardcoded secrets found in source.
.env.localignored correctly. - Cloud Run deployment injects secrets via Secret Manager; ensure build stage uses dummy ALLOWED_EMAILS only.
- Confirm TLS enforcement at ingress (Needs verification) and document secret rotation cadence.
Authentication, Authorization & Session Management¶
- Allowlist enforcement is effective and log sanitization now suppresses allowlist contents; monitor for regressions during credentials flow changes.
- Credentials provider is gated by
ENABLE_TEST_CREDENTIALS(false in production). Consider removing provider entirely in production builds to reduce attack surface. - JWT strategy uses defaults (HS256, 30-day session). Evaluate max session age, rotation, and refresh tokens per ASVS V2.2. No MFA – document residual risk or plan upgrade.
Data Protection & Privacy¶
- Logging subsystem stores errors as JSON and now applies PII/secret redaction via the centralized logger. Next step: execute retention runbook (ASVS V9.1).
- Bcrypt cost factor 10 is acceptable; Argon2id recommended if runtime permits. Ensure TLS 1.2+ enforced and log scrubbing for PII.
Input Validation & Output Encoding¶
- UI relies on React escaping; no direct XSS sinks observed.
- Schema lacks cumulative message size control; add total payload caps (e.g., 100 KB conversation).
API & Microservices¶
/api/chatperforms structured logging and differentiates errors/quotas. Harden rate limit per above and add idempotency keys for long-running operations (ASVS V4.3).- Model registry fallback uses environment variable
SKIP_VERTEX_MODEL_VALIDATION; ensure flag cannot be set in production (policy-as-code).
Infrastructure & Deployment¶
- Cloud Run deployment uses
--allow-unauthenticated; rely on NextAuth but monitor for bypass attempts. Evaluate Cloud Armor or IAP for defense-in-depth. - GitHub Actions rely on JSON key (
GCP_SA_KEY). ✅ Resolved – deployment workflow authenticates through Workload Identity Federation. - Add IaC policy scanning (kics/conftest) and container runtime security (non-root enforced already, good practice).
Logging, Monitoring & Incident Readiness¶
- Structured JSON logging in production is a positive, but missing SIEM integration/alerting. Implement alerts for auth failures, rate-limit bursts, and privilege events.
- Define retention and immutability; enable Cloud Logging CMEK and access audit trails. 📘 Runbook published (
docs/security/LOGGING-RUNBOOK.md); production execution pending.

Remediation progress (Nov 8, 2025): Tasks 1–8 are complete. Log redaction is enforced globally, production logging controls are validated (
docs/security/LOGGING-RUNBOOK-EXECUTION.md), and the threat model plus tabletop exercise artifacts are published (docs/security/THREAT-MODEL.md,docs/security/TABLETOP-PLAN.md,docs/security/TABLETOP-REPORT.md). GitHub Actions use pinned SHAs, Cloud Run deployments rely on Workload Identity Federation, and the Docker base image is locked to an immutable digest. Regression coverage validates the chat schema, rate-limit protections, and CSP enforcement.
